One of the most common questions we get at RAW Scuba Diving is how long it takes to get certified. The honest answer is: it depends on you — but most students complete the entire process in 2 to 3 weekends.
Scuba certification has three components: eLearning, Confined Water skills training, and Open Water dives. Each one can be scheduled on its own timeline, which is one of the big advantages of private instruction.
The knowledge portion is completed online at your own pace before you ever get in the water. It covers everything you need to know to dive safely — broken into sections with quizzes and a final exam. Some students knock it out in a few evenings. Others spread it over a couple of weeks. There's no rush.
Once your eLearning is done, we meet in a pool to work through the 24 required skills. We discuss each skill on the surface first, then demonstrate it underwater before you practice it yourself. Most students complete this in 4 to 6 hours depending on how quickly the skills come together. With private instruction you're never waiting on a group — we move at your pace.
The final step is four open water dives at Wheeler Branch Park in Glen Rose, Texas — completed over two days. This is where everything comes together. You'll dive to depth, practice your skills in real conditions, and explore a genuinely impressive dive site with sunken aircraft, helicopters, a bus, a boat, dinosaur sculptures, and a firefighter memorial on the lake bottom.
Most students complete certification in 2 to 3 weekends from start to finish. The eLearning can run concurrently with scheduling, so often the total elapsed time is just two or three weeks. Some students have done it faster. It's entirely up to your schedule.
