Diving on Wrecks with Sharks off Morehead City, NC
In late July, we headed to Morehead City, North Carolina — a stretch of coast often called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," and it lived up to the name. We dove the Aeolus, a decommissioned Coast Guard cutter deliberately sunk as an artificial reef, and the Caribsea, a WWII freighter torpedoed just off the coast — both classic wrecks in these waters. The real highlight, though, was the sand tiger sharks. Despite their toothy, menacing look, these are docile animals that congregate around the wrecks in surprising numbers, gliding past divers at close range. Seeing them stacked up around the Caribsea's wreckage, weaving in and out of the structure, was a reminder of why this stretch of coast draws divers from all over.
